Advent and Lent
The season of Advent is observed the four Sundays before Christmas, usually beginning on the week following Thanksgiving. During Advent we prepare ourselves for the coming celebration of Christ’s Birth by looking into the prophecies found in the Old Testament concerning his birth and ministry. At DPC we gather on Christmas Eve for worship three times! At 5:00 p.m. we hold a truly lively (and completely crowded) Children’s Service in the sanctuary. At 8:00 and 10:00 p.m. we hold services primarily for adults. Our goal for Christmas Eve Worship is to celebrate the glory and grandeur of the birth, but to also to note its humble manner that actually called forth human compassion.
The season of Lent is observed the six Sundays before Easter, culminating with the celebration of Easter Worship. During Lent we prepare ourselves for the glory of resurrection to come, by looking into the teachings of Jesus and the work of Christ upon the cross. During Holy Week, on Palm Sunday, we celebrate Jesus' entry to Jerusalem and cry out ‘Hosanna!’ On Maundy Thursday we remember how Jesus asked his followers to ‘remember him’ by participating in the Sacrament of Communion. On Good Friday, a Tenebrae Service (as guests of our friends at Boyd’s Presbyterian Church), brings our focus to the seven words spoken by Jesus from his cross. On Easter, we celebrate the wonder and glory of Christ's resurrection!
