Why I Belong...

dave_mcclung_for_website

We arrived with three active school aged boys, knowing no one in the summer of 1988.  Mary and I looked for a new Presbyterian Church community close to home which would provide spiritual fellowship.  We were delighted to discover Darnestown Presbyterian as we explored the area, and were impressed by the friendly reception of members, the warm worship service, the fine preaching and the sense of inclusion, fellowship and mission. Not to mention the quaint Civil War era sanctuary.

Over the past 20 years, (it is hard to believe!), we have become active in numerous ways—choir, bells, Elders, the women’s association, Christian education.  One of the most compelling ministries we have experienced is our Drift Mission Project. For 20 years an erstwhile group of adults and teens traveled to Drift, KY for a one week ministry of vacation bible school in the mornings and work projects in the afternoon.  The Drift community is a depressed coal mining area with few of the resources and amenities we take for granted. The fellowship and spiritual growth experienced as the adults and teens worked together in this ministry was truly remarkable. Dave started taking our sons as they became eligible, and experienced the joy of sharing the story of Jesus’ love for all with the young people in the vacation bible school programs and spent afternoons building wheelchair ramps, repairing/replacing porches, floors, walls, roofs, and such.

We have been blessed as a church community and DPC continually seeks to develop avenues to share our blessings of time, talent and treasure. That DPC has made significant commitments to mission locally, regionally, and internationally has kept us in the church.  DPC has continued to adapt to changing needs and challenges with a warm, spiritually based fellowship focused on the word of Jesus Christ.  Why do we belong? DPC has truly become a special part of our lives!
