Board of Deacons
The office of Deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness and service after the example of Jesus Christ (Book of Order, G-2.02), and the ministry of the Board of Deacons is very important in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Deacons are elected (selected by the membership of the church) and are ordained for leadership through this ministry. Adult Deacons serve in rotating three-year terms, so every year new Deacons are added to the board here at Darnestown Presbyterian. At least two youth Deacons are also elected every year to one year terms. The DPC Board of Deacons meets monthly on the 4th Monday of each month, except during July and December. Alan Munter is the current Moderator, Chris Ackerman is the Vice Moderator, and Cheryl Dottermusch performs the role of Secretary for the Deacons. The Rev. Tamara Leonard Lara staffs the Board.
While a Deacon's most visible role is ushering during Worship Services, our Deacons do much more to support our ministry and care for our members. Deacons bear the primary responsibility for Congregational Care, supporting those who are shut-in, ill or otherwise in need. This includes sending cards, making some home visits, and coordinating various forms of aid and acts of caring for members of our congregation. Deacons also lead efforts to plan and stage Fellowship events throughout the year, including multiple forms of morning fellowship, the annual church picnic each September, and at least two evening fellowship events per year.
Each member of the Board of Deacons serves on at least one of the Committees listed below.
